Open Question: when to use overdrive in expedition?

2004 Ford Expedition 4 speed automatic with overdrive. I know some people drive full time with OD on as it supposedly increases your MPGs. Is this really true and will it hurt anything running it in OD full time? Is it better used around town around 45 mph at highest or better for highway speed? can someone give me a quick rundown of what exactly OD is doing as well?
